Dothan Used Cars – Dothan, AL- Every time I turn around, other Northers move to my neighborhood. I began to think that all of my neighbors were Yankees. This isn’t really a problem, but obviously most of these people aren’t prepared for how we do things in Dothan. Here are a few things you need to know before moving to Dothan.
Never order a bottle of pop or a can of soda in Dothan. This is called “Coke”. You don’t need to worry about getting the wrong drink; the waiter will always ask “What kind of Coke”? If he doesn’t ask, he’s from the North and you have the right to fix it because of his failure.

If you order tea, expect the tea to be sweetened – and frozen. If you want hot tea or unsweetened tea, you should tell others that you are not from around here.
We are fully aware of the high humidity in Dothan; we have lived here all our lives. Look around our senior women; they don’t get extraordinary skin from the bottle. If you don’t believe, look at the seniors who spent their entire lives in desserts. Be thankful for the moisture.
We also realize how hot summer is. We don’t complain about that, we sit in the shade, we move a little slower and we drink a lot of tea. Successfully you have to try it.
Yes, we know how to speak proper English; believe or not Dothan school teaches English and also our college. We talk like this because we don’t want to sound like you.
Don’t ever try to pretend a Southern accent, you can’t do it and we’ll laugh at you like we did Dan Aykroyd at Driving Miss Daisy.
Misuse of words Ya’ll be the first indicator of a Yankee faking a Southern accent. “Ya’ll” is always plural and possessive “Yes’lls”. “You” and “You” are used in a singular form. Keep straight.
The southern dialect will naturally propagate into your speech. Most Northern people adopt “Big Ole” first, such as “Big ole truck”, or “Big ole ice tea”. Although most of the North people adopted the southern accent denied this fact.
It is not wise to laugh at the behavior of the South. We say ladies and gentlemen. We rarely make noise in public, and we do our best not to be arrogant. People who do not have manners are not raised properly – said nuff.
Never try to explain to someone in Dothan how to prepare a barbecue – you might end up in a pine box.
We call all our women as women, and all of them, even if you think otherwise.
We know that some of our old drivers have trouble keeping the car on the right track. We never shouted at them, we just shook our heads and said “bless their hearts” then prayed silently to get them home safely.
If there are even the smallest predictions of snow, we will close all schools and you should go to the nearest grocery store to buy milk and bread whether you need it or not.
We don’t care if you can drive in the snow, we have the right to get a break and we will take it.
You can ask for guidance from anyone in Dothan, but unless you know where your previous things will continue to disappear. For example, “to get your new car label, turn right on the First National Bank, past the Houston Hotel and then the Greyhound Bus Terminal, it is a tall building behind Dothan Federal Savings and Loan, if you get to your Supreme Ice Cream too far”.
If you are wondering where everyone is on Sunday morning – we are at church. You are advised to stay away from the road between noon and 12:30 on Sundays because Baptists try to defeat the Methodists to Piccadilly; this is not for the weak person.
Never try to get past the telephone company on the last date to pay your telephone bill. We park in the middle of the road to make payments regardless of the traffic that needs to be passed. Just accept it.
Autumn marks the beginning of the social season in the south. Some cities in the south start by inviting some people to selected very elite parties (eg, Harvest Ball in Atlanta). In Dothan, we include everyone in celebration; this is called the Peanut Festival, the same principle but far more pleasant.
In short, respect for parents, raise your children properly, find a good church, and let Dothan keep the charm that is always there – then we will all get along well.
