Used Car Batteries Charlotte Nc – Daimler will buy battery cells worth more than € 20 billion (Dh83.61bn) in 2030 for preparing mass production of hybrid and electric vehicles, car maker Mercedes-Benz said on Tuesday. This company is one of a number of German automakers that are highly developed in electric vehicles because European regulators are pressing toxic diesel emissions.
“With extensive orders for battery cells until 2030, we set another important milestone for the electrification of our future electric vehicles,” said Wilko Stark, who oversees procurement and quality suppliers at the Mercedes-Benz Cars board.

Daimler refused to say which supplier would be awarded the contract. The company already has cell battery supply offers with Korea’s SK Innovation, LG Chem and China Contemporary Amperex Technology, because it plans to launch 130 electric and hybrid vehicles by 2022 in addition to making electric vans, buses and trucks.
Stuttgart-based Daimler requires battery cells because it builds a global network of battery assembly plants in Kamenz, Untertuerkheim and Sindelfingen in Germany, as well as in Beijing, Bangkok and Tuscaloosa, USA, according to Reuters.
Daimler said it expanded its competence in battery cell research and worked on next-generation batteries to reduce its dependence on expensive rare earth minerals including cobalt, which was mainly sourced from the war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Mercedes-Benz EQ electric car, set for the 2019 launch, will use battery cells containing 60 percent nickel, 20 percent manganese and 20 percent cobalt, the company said.
The future of Mercedes-Benz electric cars will contain batteries using 80 percent nickel and only 10 percent manganese and 10 percent cobalt, he added.
“Our engineers also work on a ratio of 90 percent nickel, 5 percent manganese 5 percent cobalt to further reduce the amount of rare earth metals,” said Daimler, adding that it also works on solid state batteries – which do not require cobalt – for future products.
The car industry currently has a variety of different battery recipes competing for use in battery cathodes. One of them is NCA, or nickel cobalt aluminum oxide, produced by Panasonic and used by Tesla.
Chinese manufacturers use a composition called LFP which has a lower energy density but without cobalt, while Japanese carmakers use LMO, or lithium manganese oxide, which is used by Nissan and LG Chem.
Daimler’s announcement came after German luxury car rival BMW in September said it planned more deals with mining companies to secure electric vehicle battery materials, and was open to forming alliances to share the cost of developing autonomous vehicle systems.
A member of the BMW board, Klaus Froehlich said car makers and big suppliers began discussing how to agree on a standard for autonomous vehicle systems. Mr Froehlich said in the past producers and suppliers must agree to a single standard.
“Everyone has an interest or must have interest” in the standard of a general autonomous vehicle, Mr Froehlich said during the event to showcase a futuristic, electric and autonomous 4×4.
Regarding batteries, Mr Froehlich said, BMW was pursuing a strategy aimed at securing batteries that were cheaper than rivals, in part by controlling the supply of raw materials for battery-making partners.
“We will have an agreement with a mining company,” Froehlich said. “We have one agreement. There will be more.” The main problem, he said, is to secure cobalt from mines that do not exploit workers or employ children.
