Used Cars In Appleton Wi – Question: One day I saw a white city SUV with cameras on all four corners and on the roof. Is this used to take pictures of houses for the My Neighborhood Appleton website? Of course it is a vehicle that looks strange.

Answer: The SUV you see does not take photos for the Appleton My Neighborhood property website. Instead, it was Appleton’s new Chalking virtual parking enforcement vehicle. It has been used since October. Vehicle costs $ 98,000: $ 30,000 for SUVs and $ 68,000 for equipment, including four prominent cameras, two contour measuring lasers, GPS antennas, onboard computers, symbol and image recognition software, and printers.

This technology is used to capture and ticket motorists who do not comply with city parking regulations.

“This system recognizes infracting vehicles using a combination of plates and vehicle recognition technology to accurately determine the color of the plates, contours and length of each scanned vehicle,” Paula Vandehey, Appleton director of public works, said in a memo to Aldermen. “Using GPS technology, vehicles that are outside the deadline that are permitted are documented and quoted.”

The drive-by system is called autoChalk and is made by Tannery Creek Systems Inc. from Canada.

In his proposal to Appleton, Tannery Creek said autoChalk “doubled your parking enforcement staff productivity which results in better city coverage, more tickets, stiffer enforcement, less cheating, and a more automated method for enforcing timed parking.”

The company says autoChalk works in all types of weather, even when number plates are not visible.

Chad Doran, Appleton’s communications coordinator, said the autoChalk vehicle was used to enforce time zone parking zones as well as not stopping, not standing and no parking zones.

Currently it is not used to check parking meters or 2am to 5am parking within parking limits, but officials are working to expand their use to enforce overnight restrictions in the near future.
