Used Cars Marion Il – If you see a dark gray mid-gray Chevrolet pick-up truck that passes Marion with an American flag waving in the wind and you think that the driver must head patriotic gear, you will be right on both counts. It belongs to 21-year-old Mattson Hurder, a SIUC student from Des Plaines, who works at Marion Auto Zone. “This is my first truck. I built it in our garage with my father,” he said. “It was my first year in high school and it took six years to reach this point.” It turns out that trucking is more than one family affair as explained by Hurder.

“Me and dad took a little Chevy engine from my grandfather he put in the yard,” Hurder said. “Also under the hood, we use some GM wreck suspension. That’s your Chevelles, your Malibus, your Monte Carlos. There is a Dodge Intrepid steering rack to maintain steering specifications and then we have a $ 700 four-speed automatic transmission and bolts from Trans-Am . ”

The 1954 model truck is still in process, and when asked if he added the AC to the truck, Hurder laughed and admitted, “I don’t even have a heater. I have to tie it on cold days when I drive.”

He did have plans to add heaters before falling. When you work until college, choices must be made.

It shouldn’t be surprising to learn that Hurder majored in automotive technology at SIU.

Hurder admits that he came with his love for an old car honestly.

“When I grew up, my parents both became cars,” he said. “My mother owned the Fiat 1972 convertible and the 1974 coupat. I actually bought a coupe from her a few years ago and she sells convertibles to buy her Harley. We always have cars in the family. My father owns” 77 Pontiac CanAm. It was the first machine I made back and we did it 10 years ago. It exploded last month when he drove it to a car show. ”

Oh, and when asked about his passion for flying Old Glory in his pickup truck bed, Hurder said, “I am very patriotic. I and my brother really want to be in our military. Unfortunately, we both have asthma and they refused us. So, I donated to VA and I did what I could, and it’s funny you mentioned that because tomorrow I get a tattoo of an American flag. ”

Not surprisingly, Hurder received many comments, all of which were positive, from others who saw flags fluttering on the bed of his truck.

“A few days ago, I was driving on the highway and this Vietnamese veterinarian pulled me next to a red light and saluted me. Gosh, that is very low!”
