Waukegan Used Car Dealers – The market for new cars in the US stuttered, with big cars from Ford to Nissan reporting a decline in sales last month. This decline occurred after about 39 million used cars were sold in the US last year. A car analyst said NPR that President Trump’s tariff strategy would probably mean higher costs for prospective car buyers from time to time. But the price tag for new cars has increased, said Jonathan Linkov, auto deputy editor for Consumer Reports.

“A few years ago, it cost $ 27,500, then $ 29,500, now almost $ 30,000 is the average price of a new car,” he said. “It’s a difficult thing for people, and it’s an ordinary car – you’re talking a Honda Accord, a Toyota Camry. We’re not talking about people who buy BMW 3 Series, Audi A5, and so on.”

The problem is, when people decide to look past the shiny new car at many dealers, the preferred one is used, most of them are above their heads.

“Often, people enter buying used cars because they are desperate or in need,” Linkov told Here & Now’s Jeremy Hobson. “They went in and they bought almost what they found – they went to kick a tire as possible, and they drove by vehicle.”

Start your own search? Here are some suggestions for buying used cars:

5 Things You Must Do When Looking for Used Cars
The test sniffed: “Come in and if the smell smells musty, it smells oily, it smells like an engine problem or a water problem, something like that,” Linkov said, so it’s best to leave.
Turn on the engine: “Blow blue smoke or white smoke out of the exhaust, [it will be no-no, because you have water problems, you have mixing oil with fuel, leaking coolant,” he said.
Get a vehicle identification number, or VIN: “It’s on the plate in front of the driver’s side window, or you can get it at registration,” Linkov said. “If you are looking at personal sales, in particular, but even going out at the dealer, ask them to run VIN in their service records and see what the car’s history is. How often do cars get in and out of service? Is it bouncing? … You’re new just start getting a history of life. ”
Check if the lights are foggy: “If you see that the lights are a little foggy, that means there might be a water problem, maybe a flood,” he said. “So if there is moisture condensation that looks like inside a lamp, avoid the car.”
Keep an eye on rust: “You want to find rust on things like screws,” Linkov said. “Look at the chair. If the seat bolt doesn’t look like it’s painted, and they look new and the rest of the car looks like its age, [seat] is replaced. Why is the seat replaced? Why does the carpet look a little different on one side? Why is rust below the inside of the lips engine bay? Items like that. ”

When It Comes For Distance, How High Is Too High?
“It depends on the reliability of the vehicle,” Linkov said. “You can get a lot of vehicles coming out 200,000 miles. We see, from the Ford Ranger pickup truck – which, unfortunately, many of them have Takata airbag problems that occur right now – but they are reliable. You can have a Toyota Camry that spans 200,000 miles At the same time, you can have a car that has lots of electronics, and it’s 75,000 to 100,000 miles, you don’t want to get into repair with that.

“Brands are the beginning, but look at specific models. You have to start digging. You have to use information, like in Consumer Reports, but on other sites too, to see reliability information.”

What does ‘Certified’ mean?
“Certified is a term to say that it has been checked very well. Dealers have taken a risk on the car, and they will say, ‘Well, you know, it’s clean enough. It seems like there’s no problem with that. We’re happy to sell it, because we don’t “I’ll take it back, ‘maybe, in a lot of warranty repairs. This is just an added bonus,’ Linkov said.” It’s like an extended warranty. So the regular three-year warranty number, 36,000 [miles], four years, 50,000 miles. This will extend the warranty.

“For the most part, you would say, this might be a pretty good vehicle, but it’s good to get a certification from a manufacturer, not a third party. So if a Toyota dealer sells a certified Camry, make sure it’s certified through Toyota and the dealer, not through a third party . ”

Bargain: Yes or no?
“You really have to bid as much as you can,” Linkov said. “Do your research. Look, once again, Consumer Reports have prices, ranges, for cars. You can see in Auto Trader, you can see all the different sites out there and see what type of car in general mileage, price range, conditions are happening.

“Make your offer. If you come out and they say, ‘No, no, no, wait,’ you know there are rooms. The best thing about used cars is that there are so many of them out there.”
